Speech Therapy Services

  • A relaxed, parent-led conversation where we listen, answer questions, and help you decide next steps.

Your complimentary consultation is a relaxed, parent-led conversation designed to help you feel heard and supported. You’ll share your child’s strengths, concerns, and communication history, while we listen carefully, answer questions, and explain how speech therapy works at Upword. We’ll often offer practical suggestions you can try right away and help you decide whether an evaluation or therapy is the right next step.

Our goal is for you to leave the call feeling informed, confident, and clear about your options.

  • A balanced, child-centered assessment that looks at communication in real-life contexts.

A speech and language evaluation helps us understand your child as a whole communicator. We begin with a caregiver interview and case history, because you know your child best. Depending on your child’s age and needs, we may use standardized assessments alongside natural, play-based activities, observation, conversation, and functional routines.

This balanced approach provides a more authentic picture of how your child communicates in everyday life. Afterward, we review results in clear, caregiver-friendly language and discuss recommendations and next steps together.

  • Often right away, depending on availability.

Upword Speech Therapy was built for families who want to begin high-quality pediatric speech therapy without long waitlists or complicated referral processes. Availability is discussed during your consultation, and we’re often able to begin services promptly - either in-home on Oahu or virtually across Hawaii and California.

  • Individualized, engaging sessions built around your child’s needs and interests.

No two therapy sessions look exactly the same. Every session is individualized based on your child’s interests, communication style, sensory needs, attention patterns, and goals. Therapy may include play-based interaction, structured practice, AAC support, storytelling, or academic language work - but it is always engaging, affirming, and relationship-centered. Caregivers are welcome to observe or participate, and we share takeaways and simple strategies after sessions to support carryover at home.

  • Yes! Flexibility is built into our model.

Many families combine in-home and virtual sessions to accommodate work schedules, school breaks, travel, or childcare changes. If something isn’t working, we’ll problem-solve together and adjust to maintain consistency and support.

  • Yes! Research-supported and highly effective for many children.

Virtual speech therapy (telepractice) is endorsed by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and is highly effective for many communication goals. It allows children to participate from home, often leading to stronger caregiver involvement, consistent attendance, and flexible scheduling. Sessions are interactive, engaging, and tailored to your child’s needs.

  • We support and celebrate each child’s unique way of communicating, focusing on building confidence, connection, and meaningful skills.

A neurodiversity-affirming approach means we recognize and respect differences in how children think, learn, and communicate. We presume competence and support each child as a capable individual, rather than trying to change who they are.

Our work focuses on helping children communicate more effectively in ways that feel natural and authentic to them. This may include supporting speech, language, AAC, or other forms of communication while honoring sensory needs, autonomy, and emotional well-being.

We prioritize connection, trust, and meaningful progress over compliance-based or “one-size-fits-all” approaches, and we work closely with caregivers to support each child in a way that feels respectful, supportive, and aligned with your family’s values.

Pediatric Speech Therapy Payments, Insurance & Cost

  • Yes! Many families combine services for more comprehensive support.

Many families choose to combine private speech therapy with school-based or insurance-funded services to increase frequency, focus on goals not included in an IEP, or receive more individualized, family-centered support. Upword Speech Therapy often serves as a bridge between home, school, and other providers, collaborating closely with teachers, BCBAs, occupational therapists, pediatricians, and specialists to support communication growth across environments.

  • We are a private-pay practice and provide superbills for reimbursement.

Upword Speech Therapy is a private-pay practice, which allows families full flexibility in therapy frequency, goals, and approach. We do not bill insurance directly and are not restricted by insurance limitations on treatment style or duration. Many families successfully seek out-of-network reimbursement by submitting a superbill, which we are happy to provide.

  • We accept credit card payments through a secure, HIPAA-compliant system. We also accept Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), making it easier to use pre-tax funds for your child’s therapy.

  • Limited availability based on clinician capacity.

We offer a limited number of sliding-scale openings based on clinician availability and caseload capacity. While we may not be able to accommodate every request, we approach these conversations with honesty and care. If we’re not the right financial fit, we’re always happy to help connect you with other respectful, evidence-based pediatric speech therapy resources.

  • The Private School Participation Project (PSPP) is a federally funded program for eligible private school students in Hawaii.

The PSPP program provides special education services -including speech therapy - to eligible students attending private schools in Hawaii. As an approved PSPP vendor, Upword provides therapy aligned with each student’s Service Plan when eligibility and funding allow. If you’re unsure whether your child qualifies, we’re happy to help guide you.
